This popular session is being offered twice; space is still available in the encore of this session, being offered on Saturday at 2:30 pm.

Effective math instruction depends on effective differentiation, and assessments become more accessible and informative when similar differentiation techniques are utilized. In this session, we'll explore a simple way to transform assessment to meet the needs of our diverse learners.

By adapting strategies from More Good Questions by Amy Lin and Marian Small, we have implemented a simple, game-changing technique to differentiate assessment. We consider the assessed standard and craft leveled “parallel tasks” for students to select to demonstrate their current level of content mastery. As they choose their own challenge, students who struggle AND those who thrive are able to accurately depict their math understanding. The specific, individualized results inspire ALL students to grow.

Leveled questions not only meet the diverse needs of students, but also offer a safe place for students to challenge themselves. Through these assessments, students have the opportunity to demonstrate higher levels of mastery due to the low risk nature of completing a higher level problem. Join us to engage in an authentic process of thoughtful planning and design of differentiated assessments for your own students using the suggestions and ideas we will share.
